EXAMINATION OF INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS USED IN THE SCIENCES AND ART CENTERS

ABSTRACT

This research was conductedin order todetermine the frequencies of teachers working in the Science and Art Centers to use the methods and techniques resorted to in the education of the gifted. Survey method was used in this descriptive study. Population was composed of 675 teachers working in 61 Science and Art Centers in Turkey for the 2010-2011 academic year while research sample consisted of teachers working in 24 Science and Art Centers randomly selected out of 61 Science and Art Centers operating in Turkey. As data collecting tool, a questionnaire which was developed by the researcher and composed of items related to the personal information of the teachers and their frequencies to use the methods and techniques in the education of the gifted was employed in the research. This data collecting tool was sent to the whole sample but 318 teachers participated in the study. Frequency, percentage, arithmetic average techniques were used in the analysis of the data as well as variance analysis, t-test, Kruskall Wallis-H (KWH), Mann Whitney U (MWU) and Scheffe tests. Findings of the analysis regarding the frequencies of the teachers to use the methods and techniques resorted to in the education of the gifted individuals revealed that teachers used the observation method-technique at most while they used the structured grid method at least. It was also determined that teachers applied the project-based learning, problem-based learning, answer-question, self-assessment, interview, portfolio, group assessment, poster, discussion, experiment, brain storming, drama, visual presentations methods and techniques frequently. Furthermore, teachers occassionally used the concept maps, plain expression, rubric, attitude and interest tests, control lists, peer assessment, seminar works, trips, autobiography, diagnostic tree method and techniques.
