LEARNING STRATEGIES IN THE CURRICULA OF ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY

Abstract
Learning to learn is a very important component of effective learning
and it includes learning strategies. Students need to learn and use learning strategies
for effective learning in schools. In this research it was aimed to identify whether
learning strategies have been taught to students sufficiently or not in elementary
and secondary schools. The research was carried out with a sample of 349 teachers
teaching in those schools in Eskişehir during the academic year of 2001-2002. The
data were collected by means of a questionnaire. The results indicated that learning
strategies were taught insufficiently in schools, teachers believed it was useful
or necessary to teach learning strategies, teachers declared that they had not enough
knowledge about learning strategies in order to be able to teach them effectively
and they were eager to participate in an inservice training program about learning
strategies.
