Abstract
Development in technology brings about the technology use by all individuals from the old and young alike. Technology use is not always necessarily positive. One of the negative and misuse of technology is cyber bullying. The aim of this study is to examine whether cyber bullying and suffering levels of students studying in different secondary education institutions differ or not according to school types and gender. The research was performed according to scanning model. In the study, instant situation determination which is one of scanning models was carried out. The sample of the study comprises of 334 students studying in province of Sakarya in the first term of 2010-2011 education year. In selection of the sample, simple random sampling method was used. As the data collection tool in the study, “Cyber Bully/Victim Questionnaire” developed by Ayas & Horzum (2010) was used. In the analysis of the obtained data, for gender for unrelated samples t-test and for school type and their classes ANOVA test were made. As a result of the study, difference was found in suffering from cyber bullying and showing such behaviors according to gender. It was found that male students show more cyber bullying behaviors compared to female students. Those studying in private high schools and those in Anatolian High schools who are accepted with exam do more cyber bullying than those in other high schools. In addition, regarding school types it was found that cyber bullying cases occur less in schools where only students of one gender study than those where both female and male students study. This finding suggests that cyber bullying cases occur more in schools where students of different genders study together.
