Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of logical and analytical thinking skills of the students who were enrolled in the department of Computer Programming on their achievement in programming languages. “The Scale of Holistic and Analytical Thinking” and “Logical Thinking Skills Scale” were administered on a total of 142 students who were enrolled in Adnan Menderes University Aydın Vocational High School. Correlation and regression analyses were performed to analyze the relationship between logical thinking skills and analytical thinking skills of students and their achievement in programming languages. Descriptive statistics, factor load values, correlation and regression analyses were used to evaluate the results. Correlation analyses found a positive, high-level and statistically significant relationship between analytical thinking and achievement in programming; a positive, moderate-level and statistically significant relationship between logical thinking and achievement in programming. Independent variables were analytical and logical thinking, while dependent variable was achievement in programming in the model constructed for regression analysis. All coefficients obtained from the study were found to be significant at .01 level. When analytical and logical thinking skills of the students improve, their achievement in programming will increase as well. Therefore, it is recommended to use techniques and methods to encourage students to develop analytic and logical thinking.
