Abstract

In this study Turkish data in the Third International Science and Mathematics Study (TIMSS) were analyzed by Linear Structural Modeling. The purpose of this analysis is to investigate the factors effecting students achievements in Science and Mathematics at the 8th grade level. Two models were fitted and interpreted for the mathematics and science achievement. Perception of success and socio-economic status were identified as two important latent variables to predict achievement in mathematics and science. On the other hand, as the frequency of classroom activities, which could be considered as student-centered, such as project works, classroom discussions and group work increase, students achievement level decreases. This finding points out that the educational strategies being used within the educational system should be reconsidered again with reference to teacher competencies and students expectations.
