Abstract
Even though hearing impairment is described in various ways in literature, generally has a common content. Purpose of this article is to explain the definition of hearing impairment and language characteristics related to syntax, semantics, phonology and pragmatics. Academic achievement of children with hearing impairment is considered and reading and writing abilities are highlighted. Studies about language development of children with hearing impairment argue that there’s no significant relationship between language development and hearing impairment. Authors of this article suggest that in order to reinforce language development and academic skills of children with hearing impairment, curriculums must consist of not only communication based activities but also language based activities.s
